Abstract

This study investigates pre-service EFL teachers’ behavioural intention to use Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Specifically, it examines the relationships between Attitude, Subjective Norm, Perceived Behavioural Control (PBC), and Behavioural Intention to use GenAI for teaching-related activities. A quantitative correlational design was employed with 242 pre-service EFL teachers selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an 18-item Likert-scale questionnaire adapted from previous studies and analysed using IBM SPSS Statistics 27. The findings indicate that the respondents generally demonstrated favourable perceptions and intentions toward using GenAI. Attitude, Subjective Norm, and PBC were found to be significantly related to Behavioural Intention when examined simultaneously, with the regression model explaining 82.5% of the variance in Behavioural Intention (R² = .825). However, Attitude did not show a statistically significant relationship with Behavioural Intention when the three predictors were analysed simultaneously (p = .056), whereas Subjective Norm and PBC contributed significantly. These findings suggest that pre-service EFL teachers’ intention to use GenAI is particularly associated with perceived social expectations and their perceived capability to use the technology. The study highlights the relevance of TPB in understanding GenAI adoption among future EFL teachers. Keywords: Generative Artificial Intelligence, Pre-Service EFL Teachers, Theory of Planned Behaviour, Attitude toward the Use of Generative AI, Subjective Norm, Perceived Behavioural Control, Behavioural Intention.
