Abstract
ABSTRACT In the era of globalization, English language skills are essential for career readiness, particularly in technical fields such as Building Information Modeling (BIM). However, vocational students often face difficulties developing professional English skills because curricula tend to prioritize technical competencies. This study examines BIM students’ perceptions of the importance of English skills for career readiness and the challenges they experience in developing these skills. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed using a questionnaire validated by 30 respondents and distributed to 72 BIM students at a public vocational school in Bandung. The findings showed that 97.3% of students recognized English-speaking skills as a competitive advantage in seeking employment, while 84.7% lacked confidence in using English professionally. Furthermore, 94.4% perceived that English lessons did not sufficiently focus on workplace speaking skills. These findings indicate a gap between students’ awareness of the importance of English and their readiness to use it professionally. Therefore, vocational education should provide more practical and interactive English learning through activities such as job interview simulations, project presentations, and professional communication practice. Strengthening students’ speaking competence and confidence may enhance their career readiness in an increasingly internationalized job market.
